Faith and Technology
Technology has advanced at lightning speed. Some aspects of technology are amazing. Through technology we can communicate faster and with more people than every before. This can be great when we’re seeking to keep in contact with family and friends and even great when it comes to marketing our businesses or sharing a good cause. We also can receive tons of information, which can also be amazing. But technology can be limiting and even detrimental at times as well. During these summer months, when we may have more time to use screens, it’s a good time to consider through the lens of our faith both the benefits and downsides of technology. When used intentionally, technology can bless us and when used thoughtlessly technology can harm us. Let’s look at how to balance our lives in this technological world.
Streaming
July 20
We are in a time that we can consume technology in unlimited amounts. Streaming means you can watch whatever you want whenever you want for as long as you want. It sounds like ‘freedom,’ but there are also downsides to this new freedom. Where does our faith intersect with this aspect of technology? We consider 1)Self control, 2) Sabbath 3) Accountability
Social Media
July 27
Over 5 billion people use social media apps. That’s amazing considering twenty years ago that was very rare. These days over 90% of teenagers use social media. There are some great benefits to social media. We stay connected in good ways like never before. We are able to communicate our good causes and get the word out regarding great opportunities. However, there are side effects that can be quite detrimental, with some people spending several hours per day on social media. The new comparison culture can be detrimental. We can become anxious, sad, and withdrawn, and ironically, isolated. What can we do? 1)Stay focused (run your race, not other people’s race) 2)Stay grateful 3) stay real 4)Stay centered
